Master Class with Shelly Power

(See Important Class Update Below)

Shelly Power
Associate Director, Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy

Shelly PowerShelly Power assumed the position of associate director of Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy in 2004, bringing over 25 years of artistic and administrative experience.  Her history with Houston Ballet includes being a scholarship student who studied at the Academy from 1978-1982 and Director of Administration from 1997-2002. Ms. Power began her dance training in her hometown dance school, Southbridge School of Ballet, in Massachusetts.  She went on to study at Boston Ballet, Harkness Ballet and Houston Ballet. While at Houston Ballet, she danced in classical favorites such as The Nutcracker, Alice in Wonderland, and Swan Lake.  Ms. Power then went on to teach at the Academy. During her administration of the Academy, Ms. Power created three new programs: Chance to Dance, designed to introduce dance to students in Houston’s inner-city schools; the first annual Teacher’s Training Seminar, attended by teachers from across the United States; and a college course work program for students of the Academy which allows them to accumulate up to 30 college fine arts credits which can be transferred to the University of Houston. In 2002, she left the Academy to finish her university education. Ms. Power graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Houston with a Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies, with specializations in fine arts, psychology and business. She also received a Certificate of Advanced Training in Nonprofit Management from Case Western University. Upon graduation in 2003, Houston Ballet Artistic Director Stanton Welch recruited Ms. Power to return to Houston Ballet’s Ben Stevenson Academy as Associate Director.  Since that time, she has increased the number of performances given by Houston Ballet II, including engagements in Mexico, across the United States, Budapest and Germany. Power also greatly expanded the Academy’s summer intensive program; prepared students for high-profile competitions in Switzerland and China; and brought in internationally acclaimed teachers to work with Academy dancers.  In 2007, Ms. Power assumed leadership of Houston Ballet’s outreach and education programs. In 2010, Ms. Power was a judge for the prestigious Prix de Lausanne competition in Switzerland and the Youth America Grand Prix Finals in New York City.
